| Activities in the area |
Activities in red are ideal for Special Occasions such as a birthday or anniversary. There are also some ideas on the Places to Visit page.
|
| Walking |
There is a comprehensive network of footpaths and bridleways accessible directly from the property. Some meander along the picturesque Chalke valley whilst others follow the ancient ‘droves’ to Salisbury and Shaftesbury. These were once part of the main coach routes between London and the West Country.
We have information, maps etc. on recommended walks, many involving some of the excellent pubs in the area! |
| Cycling |
There are many quiet lanes which are perfect to cycle along whilst enjoying the Wiltshire and Dorset scenery, not to mention some beautiful villages and hostelries to visit. We have a selection of maps and suggested routes, many of which we have written ourselves. If you don’t want to bring your own bikes, we have two hybrid bikes for hire at £10 per day each, including helmets and insurance. |
| Sports |
There are several good swimming pools in the area and numerous Sports Centres, catering for most sports from archery to volleyball. Please ask for details if you would like to participate. |
| Archery |
| Try this traditional sport under the guidance of Sarum Archery’s qualified and experienced coach(s). Events for small groups are our speciality and can be arranged at Ebblesway Courtyard. The length and content of the event can be tailored to suit your requirements. This can include short talks & demonstrations, individual and team competitions and the opportunity to try an English Longbow. A great idea for a Special Occasion (birthday or anniversary?).For more information call 01722 333925 or email sarum.archery@btinternet.com |
| Golf (&Croquet) |

| Horse riding |
This area is excellent horse riding country and in fact we have some horses and donkeys stabled here. However, to enjoy a professional lesson or ‘hack’ we recommend the White Horse Trekking Centre at Codford in the Wyle valley. There is a ‘Riding for the Disabled’ centre at nearby Wilton. |
| Fishing |
The many chalk streams and freshwater lakes in the area provide excellent fishing opportunities. The river Ebble flows almost past the door and there are 2 fly fishing lakes just a mile down the road. |
| Flying |
The nearest aerodrome is Old Sarum whose Flying Club will let you experience a trial flight in a glider, microlight or light aircraft, with or without aerobatics! Great idea for a Special Occasion (birthday or anniversary?).
Compton Abbas airport in Dorset is also within easy reach.
|
| Go kart racing |
Nearby Wessex Raceway is one of the Europe’s best indoor tracks and Castle Coombe has an outdoor track. For a Special Occasion (birthday or anniversary?) why not have a Grand Prix with your friends?
Also available at Thruxton (see below)
|
| Motocross |
| |
| Motor sports |
A wide range of motor sports is available in the area, including track racing at Thruxton, skid pan training at Castle Combe and the nationally famed hill climb is just down the road at Gurston. |
Special Occasion (birthday or anniversary?) ideas:- |
Why not have a training session followed by racing a 'super car' (e.g. Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini) and a single seater racing car round Thruxton circuit? Also available are 'hands on' aerobatics, power boating, go-kart racing and 4 x 4 off-roading. |
| The Arts |
Salisbury has an excellent theatre and so many music events that there is a special website ' Music in Salisbury' to co-ordinate them. We keep details of events at most theatres, concerts, exhibitions etc both for the Salisbury area and surrounding areas (Southampton, Winchester, Bath, Poole & Bournemouth). |
